Add content and create posts and pages in WordPress

While there are some other means of adding content in WordPress, both posts and pages are definitely going to be your main source of contact with your audience. However, a lot of people don’t understand the differences between creating posts and pages – and there sure are a couple of them.

The WordPress logo.
WordPress as a platform has gained such worldwide popularity because of its simplicity.

All the high impact landing pages on your website are static. That means they aren’t listed by date or any chronological order. Posts, on the other hand, are. Post are shown in reverse chronological order on your homepage and they contain categories and tags, which is another thing they don’t have in common with pages. Considering their informative purpose, posts also have a comment section that pages lack.

In essence, when creating the static pages of your website, such as the about page, contact page, and landing pages, you will use the Pages section. When writing about different topics and enriching your blog section, you will use the Posts section. Now that we have that cleared up, let’s take a look at the easy ways of adding these types of content.

How to create posts in WordPress

To get started with writing your first blog post, the first thing you need to do is access your dashboard. On the left-hand side of it, you are going to see the Posts menu. Once you reveal the submenu by clicking on it or by hovering over the Posts section, you are going to be presented with a couple of options. One of them is going to be the ‘Add New’ option. And once this option opens, you are going to be presented with a page where you will create your blog post from start to finish.

The first box you are going to see will be the one where you input the title. Next,  you will be presented with the post formatting section which is where you will write all the content of your article. And when creating a blog website, this is arguably the most important part. Now, from this point forward is when things might get just a bit more complicated.

Add new post screen in WordPress.
Once you locate the add new post section in WordPress, all the fun can begin.

At the top of the right column of the screen, you will see a host of different options. They will control a lot of things, including:

  • The status of your post (whether it’s published, saved as a draft, or pending review)
  • The visibility of the post (what visitors can see your post)
  • The preview button (where you can get a visualization of what the final product is going to look like)

Finally, you will be able to add categories and tags to your posts. But beware – categories and tags differ in many ways, and you will need to conduct some research if you want to use them correctly.

How to create pages in WordPress

Luckily for you, once you get the hang of creating posts in WordPress, creating pages will be much easier. And vice versa. That’s because the actual creation of posts and pages in WordPress is very similar. As above, everything begins by accessing the Dashboard. And, as before, you are going to see the Pages menu on the left-hand side of it. Locate the ‘Add New’ option and open it.

Once again, you will have both the Title Field and the Text Editor field. Once you finish writing your page, you can immediately publish it by clicking the Publish button. Or you can schedule it for the exact moment that works best for you – that’s the beauty of WordPress. However, the thing that will be different is the Categories and Tags section.

The comments section to adjust when trying to create posts and pages in WordPress.
Unlike blog posts, pages don’t have to contain the comment section, as well as categories and tags.

Generally, pages don’t have to contain categories and tags, as their purpose is different than the one of blog posts. Pages have the purpose of promoting your business and its main services, so they always require a different approach than the rest of the content you put up on your website. But that topic is too broad to be discussed here and it deserves a text of its own.

Everything will be easier once you create your first post and page in WordPress
